Middle School is a time in which students transition from childlike thinking to understanding the world with greater nuance and appreciation for complexity. Activities which might have developed during childhood are often left for self-selected choices or not replaced at all.
At this important time of life, we offer students a broad range of choices inside and beyond our classrooms. Our talent development goal is to help each student discover and develop what he or she finds corresponds with newfound strengths and interests. |
Project-based Learning (PBL)All seventh and eighth grade students develop an in-depth, interest-based project and present it to their peers.
Project-based Learning (PBL) is an elective that all seventh and eighth grade students take during either the first and second marking periods or the third and fourth marking periods.
PBL is divided into three learning sections: 1. Set the Stage: Students learn about thinking dispositions, perspectives, social science research methods and begin to connect their interests to educational pathways and careers. 2. Complete an interest-based project: a. Students identify an interest and develop a knowledge base that includes historic information, current status of the field, organizations, publications and identify leading experts as well as future trends. b. Students develop an open-ended research question based on their reading and interview two field experts. 3. Students prepare a TED/Talk-style presentation using the Presentation Zen method. This presentation is given to their classmates and is followed by a questions and answer session. All students benefit by learning about real world topics and careers. |
